    Calling All Men!

Men and women both have important roles in a child’s life, especially kids in foster care. In this poignant video, Walt Bruce, a former resource parent* and current board member, reminds us of the importance of men as resource parents. If you are a man or know a man who is great with kids, please have them watch this video and reach out to us to get more info and (hopefully) start the process to becoming a resource parent. You can also read our FAQ for some of the more common questions.

    Tri-Valley Jail n Bail 2020

What a great event raising money for the foster kids of Agape Villages! Our annual Jail ‘N Bail event did not disappoint and we raised the most money we have ever raised at any previous Jail ‘N Bail events. Abiding by all Alameda county COVID guidelines, everyone wore face masks and respected the 6 feet social distancing rule. We are truly so thankful for everyone who donated and supported the event. We all enjoyed food, drinks, and great company as  donors and friends dressed up in jail costumes and went to jail to raise funds for the kids. They posted their pictures on social media, called family & friends and asked for bail money. Our judges were harsh and threw the book at many of our jailbirds, especially Jennifer and Daryn Oxe who had their bail set at a record $2000 – and they exceeded that amount by a big margin.

A huge thank you to Todd Utical, owner of SideTrack Bar + Grill, for once again donating his patio space. And to Kathy Narum and Randy Brown for donating their time as judges.

Becoming a Resource Parent Starts With a Phone Call

Watch this video from our very own Hank Lawson about how simple it is to start the process to become a resource parent (formerly foster parent) and help kids in need.

This video was made in 2020 by Hank who passed away in 2022.
While he is missed everyday we know that he would want to continue to help kids in need.

  • May is Foster Care Awareness Month

May is Foster Care Awareness Month

May is Foster Care Awareness Month. Within the 21 counties we serve in Northern California, there are over 4,500 foster youths that enter the foster system each year. Our goal is to reunite these kids, whose average age is 6 1/2, with their families. While reunification does happen most of the time, these kids need resource parents (formerly foster parents) to provide a stable, loving home for the average of 15 months that they’re in foster care.

Agape Villages is always looking for more resource families that can take in kids in foster care. You may think you’re not qualified, but the most important requirement is that you have a loving home. We have a wonderful resource of FAQ that goes into detail about the requirements.

Hank Lawson, our Director of Church & Community Relations, has a word for you about becoming a resource parent. Please watch and enjoy. If you are interested, please contact us with the form below. If you know someone who might be interested, please share this with them.

    Agape Villages COVID-19 Response

We hope that all of you are well. That you are safely sheltering in place at home. And that this will soon pass for all of us.

We want to keep you updated about the children, families, and staff at Agape Villages Foster Family Agency. We know you care about us and we care about you.

All of us at Agape are of course following the rules provided by the Government. We also immediately created a plan to ensure that our children and families are receiving the support and assistance they need.

Our social workers are able to continue their weekly “visits” with their families and children using their cell phones. Using that technology (FaceTime), they can talk and see each other. Through this means, our social workers are able to check in and provide support and reassurance.

The social workers are reminding the children to utilize healthy coping skills, such as deep breathing, journaling, and taking walks with their family. In addition, the social workers are supporting the parents, and reminding them to ensure that the children remain on a schedule as if they were still  in school (i.e. wake up at 7:30 and have breakfast, school work, break for 10 minutes, return to school work, lunch, school work until approximately 3 to 4 pm).

The families are also encouraged to cook and bake with the children, do puzzles, play board games, go for walks, color together, and teach the children a new craft or skill.

The Agape team continues to have our cell phones on 24/7 in the event our children or families need us. We encourage our families and children to remain positive while reminding them that this will pass.

Agape continues to be there for our children and families, as we have been there for more than 61 years.

    For the children,
    Janet Kleyn, President

  • Hair Care and Support From Agape Staff

Hair Care and Support From Agape Staff

From an Agape employee wanting to share a story:

I am a licensed cosmetologist, and recently reminded the social workers that if they have any families who need help with their foster/adopt children’s hair that I would be willing to meet with the families and give them some tips on doing the children’s hair. Soon after, Social Worker Brittany Barnes was approached by one of her families who was unsure of how to care for and style her African American children’s hair.

Brittany contacted me and I then reached out to the family to schedule when I could come to the home to go over hair care and some styles with the resource mom. I came to the home with specialty products like shampoo, conditioner, leave in-conditioners, and gels for the family since, in my experience, most people do not realize that black hair needs products that are made for black hair.

I then spent about 2.5 hours in the resource home walking the mom through how to wash, care for and style her foster daughters hair. The resource mom was attentive and eager to jump in and try all the new things that I was suggesting. It was obvious that the child’s cultural needs, which includes hair care, were important to this resource family and that it was amazing to see that they had no hesitation in making sure that the child’s hair was being properly cared for.

The resource mother even shared with me that she asked the biological mother if she could show her how to do a style the girls hair during one of the visits. I was able to show her the proper way and frequency for washing the children’s hair, how to maintain and care for their hair on a regular basis and some simple styles that she can do herself.

It was a great experience and so nice to see the resource mom’s motivation and commitment to the care of her foster children.

    15th Annual FFFK Golf Tournament

Our annual Fairways Fore Foster Kids golf tournament at the Manteca Golf Course was a success! We had a full house with 125 golfers. We were sold out a week before the event. The golfers enjoyed time before the tournament at the driving range, games, prizes, a raffle, silent auction, a BBQ hot dog snack and lunch at Chez Shari! See some of the pictures from the event below.
